i cannot believe that the cousin i grew up with is finally married, i feel so old. if i were to say that the wedding was an eye opening experience, i would be making a gross understatement.
for one, the red wine was handed out way too freely for my liking. i witnessed my first uncle, 4th uncle aka father of the bride and his best man dance. in front of the stage. where everybody could see them. imagine, 3 men whose total age is nearing 180 years dancing. and they were doing the twist, the dance that was so popular in the era of tea dances. old men with back problems twisting, wah lau. after that, they hijacked the stage and massacred quando quando quando because they were making up their own lyrics plus they were off tune.
then, my mum got high. they had this band up there playing which reminded me of a poorer and less glam version of 881, the singers were swaying in a uniform fashion a la The Supremes. the music was so loud that my sia cousin declared that she couldn't even taste the food. thanks to those singers, my mum started singing and clapping along. at one point in time she was almost dancing, i was so close to running out of the vip room with my spoon so i could dig a hole to crawl into. thankfully, my first uncle decided to sing most tunelesly into the microphone when he didn't know the lyrics so that kind of made me feel better.
after the wedding, a couple of us went to the bar to have a welcome drink and my uncle was still very high from all that alcohol. he proceeded to tell us of the shenanigans he and his best man got up to in ntu, they were like 2 very old frat boys recalling their days of glory. i think my cousin and i were disturbed by how open tertiary students were.
i will plaster one of the many photos i was compelled to take at the wedding here to ascertain an observation my cousin and i made. we both realised that the girls on my mother's side all have a distinct kiam pa look. all the cousins on my mum's side are really short too, though they're a good deal prettier than those on my father's side.
